The Legislature has enacted a bill to improve access to dentists across the state. The new law will take effect later this year. It allows a dental resident serving under the supervision of a licensed dentist in a board-approved dental residency program to receive a temporary permit to practice in Maine. The sponsor, Democratic Rep. Dick Blanchard of Old Town, said lack of access to providers, particularly in more rural areas, has been a barrier to obtaining dental care in Maine. Blanchard said his bill helps to remedy that.Gov. John Baldacci has signed the bill, which will take effect 90 days after the present session adjourns.
