Updated 4 years ago

A jury has decided that a Bangor man will be held responsible for trying to kill his ex-girlfriend.David Archer had pleaded not criminally responsible by reason of insanity. But jurors didn’t agree with that, returning their verdict Wednesday afternoon and ending a rare, two-part trial. On Tuesday, jurors found Archer guilty of attempted murder, elevated aggravated assault and aggravated assault for the 2008 stabbing.Jurors on Wednesday heard from mental health professionals who’d evaluated 35-year-old Archer, and heard about a past that includes mental illness as well as substance abuse. At issue was whether he had enough awareness at the time of the stabbing to sufficiently know what he was doing was wrong. After the jury’s verdict, the judge ruled Archer will be held without at bail at Penobscot County Jail until his sentencing, two or three weeks from now.
