Maine’s Most Famous Tree To Be Cut Down

Maine’s most famous tree, Herbie, is to be cut down because of Dutch elm disease, and a lot of people are expected to watch the process.Herbie’s estimated to be 240 years old. But the Maine Forest Service’s Peter Lammert will do the official counting of the tree rings as soon as Monday morning, weather dependent, to determine the actual age of the stately American elm. Other tree experts will also be on hand to answer questions. At 120 feet tall, Herbie is the largest elm in New England. Removal was planned for Martin Luther King Jr. Day to minimize traffic through the area, leave more room for a crane and for the public to view the historic removal.
