Sad End in the Search for a Missing Snowmobiler

A snowmobiler is dead after falling through thin ice on a frozen lake. Officials say 45-year-old Timothy York was last seen riding his snowmobile around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, when he said he planned to travel from Waldoboro to Nobleboro on or near Damariscotta Lake. He was reported missing at 9 a.m. Thursday. The Maine Warden Service spotted his snowmobile in the lake during an air search. Officials say divers recovered his body near the hole in the ice. Authorities throughout New England have been warning about thin ice on lakes and ponds, telling snowmobile operators that there’s no such thing as safe ice.
