Atwood Appeals for New Trial 

An appeal by a Canaan man convicted of murder went before Maine’s highest court on Wednesday.39-year-old Shannon Atwood is serving a 55-year prison sentence for killing 38-year-old Cheryl Murdoch of Waterville.Her body was found in August 2006 at a campsite near Atwood’s home.Atwood’s attorney wants a new trial.He claims that the judge in the trial that convicted Atwood was acquainted with a woman Atwood had assaulted.The lawyer also says the judge allowed improper hearsay evidence at that trial.The state claims the judge acted properly and that the verdict should stand.The Maine Supreme Court usually takes months to issue written opinions on cases months after hearing oral arguments.
