January 9, 2010 – Merrimack vs Maine – Men’s Ice Hockey

Unbeaten in their last eight games, the Maine Men’s Hockey team looked to kick off the second half of the season with a win against the Merrimack Warriors. Even though Merrimack entered tonight ninth in hockey east, the Warriors are only four points away from fourth place. In a game you could see right here on TV 5, Tim Whitehead and the Black Bears trying to keep pace with UNH atop the Hockey East standings. We start at the end of the first period, game tied at 1 when Spencer Abbott somehow finds a way to force the puck into the net to give the Black Bears the 2-1 lead going into the first period intermission. It stayed that way until the third period when Merrimack attacking on the power play, Chris Barton gets his ninth goal of the season and we’re tied up at two. After a Merrimack goal was disallowed that would have given the Warriors a 3-2 lead, Gustav “Gunner” Nyquist with under 20 seconds left, snipes a shot over Andrew Brathwaite’s shoulder to give Maine a 3-2 lead. The Black Bears would get an empty netter and win 4-2 over Merrimack.
