Entering tonight, the Class ‘A’ heel points in high school basketball had Brewer in first and Hampden in third. These two teams have been strong all season long and tonight’s matchup between the Witches and Broncos had all the makings of a great heavyweight fight. The gym at Brewer High School was at capacity long before the game began. About 1,000 people were allowed in with many being turned away at the door. Once again, the atmosphere in Brewer was electric.Probably the game of the year for Brewer’s Nate Carson. Here in the first quarter, the captain hits the three ball. 15 points for Carson and all of them valuable.Hampden’s Jacob Moore is easily on the shortlist of the best players in Class ‘A’ and here’s one reason: the mammoth block on Jordan Richards. Moore also had a team-high 17 points.Another captain for the Witches is Ray Bessette and he doesn’t back down from Moore. In the second half he goes one on one with the big one and gets the floater to fall. Brewer led at the half and carried it into the second half thanks to Dom Drake. He had a game high 23 points for the Witches tonight. Brewer at one point led 45 to 29 in the second half but with a minute to play in the game, Nolan Turner steals the inbound pass and lays it in to tie the game up at 59.Brewer though was able to ice the game from the free throw line. Hampden had one last shot with three seconds to go but they can’t get it done. It’s the second heartbreaking loss for the Broncos in a week especially after tonight’s valiant comeback. Brewer stays atop the Class ‘A’ standings with a huge 64-62 win over Hampden Academy.
