Maine State Police say a Skowhegan woman accused of killing a man in her apartment on Christmas Eve knew the victim because he gave her rides through a nonprofit agency. An affidavit filed in Somerset County Superior Court indicates 45-year-old Karen McCaul was hiding in the bathroom with Richard Howe’s body slumped against the front door when police officers arrived. Howe had been fatally stabbed and a knife was found underneath his body. McCaul made her initial court appearance Wednesday after she was released from an Acadia hospital in Bangor where she was taken after Howe died. Investigators say Howe was a volunteer driver with Kennebec Valley Community Action Project and had given McCaul rides through the program.
