The Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce has a new President and C.E.O.John Porter comes from South Portland. He worked for nearly 20 years as a journalist for the Portland Press Herald and Maine Sunday Telegram. He left when the papers were sold in June and founded a communications and government relations firm. Now Porter has decided to move north to Bangor. He says the job at the Chamber just seemed like the right fit, at the right time.He says this region has a lot of assets, most importantly the research and development happening nearby at places like the University of Maine and the Jackson Lab. “This region is better poised for growth than any other region in the state of Maine, and I think the 10 year challenge for the Bangor region is to be the top performing region economically in the state of Maine. I believe it’s doable, and I think in 5 years we can be the fastest growing region and I think in 10 years we can have the strongest incomes.”Porter was chosen unanimously by a search committee. They narrowed their choices down to five candidates before selecting Porter. The committee was formed last July after the Chamber Board decided to let go their long time President, Candy Guerrette. They said they wanted a new vision and new leadership for the Chamber.Porter will start on the job Monday, January 25th.
