Nearly 500 soldiers from Maine scheduled to head to Iraq will now stay home. Major General John Libby, the head of the Maine National Guard, says the mission for the 133rd Engineer Combat Battalion has been canceled. He says the decision is based on the plan to draw down combat forces in Iraq. We’re told the Department of Defense considered sending the unit to Afghanistan but there are already enough forces tagged for that mission.Libby is scheduled to talk more about the canceled deployment at a news conference this afternoon at Camp Keyes in Augusta.
