For the fifth year in a row, Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor is being honored for its efforts to turn tragedy into hope. Today the Department of Health and Human Services awarded the hospital the Medal of Honor for Organ Donation. Even though EMMC is not a transplant center, we’re told it has one of the best organ and tissue programs in New England. The folks with the New England Organ Bank says that’s important since more than 100-thousand people in the country are waiting on life-saving transplants.President and CEO Richard Luskin says, “Every opportunity for someone to donate is really an important one. We don’t have enough donors to meet the needs and every missed opportunity is real tragedy. It means someone’s going to die. The staff at Eastern Maine have done a really terrific job of making sure every opportunity is taken advantage of and every family given the opportunity to donate.”The award was presented to the hospital at leadership workshop at the Bangor Civic Center. Afterwards, employees were given the chance to register as organ donors.
