Committee Approves Plans for New Bangor Arena

A city committee is giving the go-ahead to plans for one of Bangor’s largest construction projects – a new arena. Now it’s up to the city council to sign off on the project.Members of the committee unanimously approved a series of recommendations last night to replace the aging Bangor Auditorium. The biggest recommendation – to build a 5,400 seat arena that could expand to 7,400 seats. That would be phase one of the project. Phase two would renovate the existing auditorium and civic center into conference space, for a total cost of about $73 million. Councilor Susan Hawes, who heads the arena committee, says she’d like to see the project break ground in the spring of 2011.The city council is expected to address the plan at its regular meeting later this month.
