Happy Howl-O-Ween Pet Safety Tips

With Halloween only a few days away, the Kennebec Valley Humane Society is urging families and individuals in central Maine to keep in mind some safety tips for their pets this year. Here are a few tips to help keep your family pet safe during this exciting holiday: ·        Keep Halloween candy away from your pet. Chocolate, artificial sweetener and candy wrappers can be very dangerous for your pet. Save all the sweet stuff for ghosts and goblins knocking at your door, but please don’t share with your family pet!·        Keep candles or carved pumpkins with candles inside away from your pets. Curious pets might knock over the candles and cause fires or burn themselves in the flame. ·        If you decide to dress up your pet, make sure the costume doesn’t make your pet uncomfortable or make difficulties for moving or breathing. If your pet seems to really dislike the costume or seems allergic, consider a festive Halloween themed bandana!·        Some pets, such as black cats, can become the object of pranks on Halloween. Keep your black cats safely inside your home on and around Halloween. ·        Consider putting your pet in a separate room when trick-or-treaters are coming to your house. For some pets, too many strangers in strange costumes can be stressful and scary.·         If you do keep your pets near the door when trick-or-treaters are coming to the house, be sure to keep your pet away from the door so that they can’t dart outside. ·        In case a pet does slip outside, be sure that your pet has proper identification. A microchip or pet tag will help your animal get home safely to you.  For more information please contact KVHS at (207) 626-3491 or visit
