A former educator at Husson University in Bangor celebrated her time in the classroom and commitment to the community Sunday. Members of the service organization Altrusa International of Greater Bangor hosted a tea honoring Clara Swan.Swan started her teaching career in 1933 – spending most of it at Husson. There she was a teacher, a coach, a dean, a department head and vice president. She also served as the Casco Bay College President from 1975 to 1981. Besides her time in the classroom, Swan has also volunteered for a number of agencies throughout the area. She says she’s always had a warm heart for people. “I weighted a pound and half when i was born. I was in a shoebox in an oven. So maybe that’s why i had a real warm start.”Sunday was also a celebration of Swan’s 97-and-a-half birthday.Donations were collected at the tea, too. The money goes to the Altrusa Clara Swan scholarship fund. That’s awarded each year to a Husson University student enrolled in the Elementary Education Program.
