Juneteenth Celebration 

The Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1863 by President Lincoln, calling for the end of slavery in our country. It was more than two years later on June 19th, that Union soldiers took that document to Texas, freeing slaves throughout the south.It’s now celebrated as Juneteenth. On Friday, folks gathered at the Brewer Auditorium to mark the occasion. The event was sponsored by the Maine Human Rights Coalition.31 states and the District of Columbia now recognize Juneteenth as an official holiday.James Varner, President of the Maine Human Rights Commission wants to try to make it a holiday in Maine too.
