Elementary Students Participate in Books for Bikes Program

Some students in Etna are the happy owners of new bikes.The Books for Bikes reading program was created through a collaboration with the Masonic Lodges of Maine and the Brain Injury Association of Maine.Children in kindergarten through fifth grade are encouraged to read.For every book they finish, their name goes into a raffle to win a bicycle.Seven students at the Etna-Dixmont Elementary School received bikes today.Also, through a grant from the Bureau of Highway Safety, every student received a bike helmet.” A lot of families buy helmets but they don’t know how to fit them, they don’t fit them correctly, so the helmet wobbles on their heads and wiggles around a lot. So we go into the classroom and teach the kids how to fit their helmets.”Students at Carmel Elementary School also received helmets today.Students at the Smith Elementary School in Levant will get theirs on Monday.
