Three Fires Keep Crews Busy

It was a busy Thursday for Lewiston firefighters with two emergency calls being received within minutes of each other. The first one broke out just before 1 pm in an apartment building at 107 Wood Street. Crews arrived to find smoke coming out of a second story unit. Everyone got out safely, but damages to the building were estimated at about $50,000 dollars. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The second fire struck a building at 183 East Avenue. Firefighters had to rip out a wall to reach the flames. But once exposed, the fire was out in a matter of minutes leaving behind about $500 in damage. Investigators believe it was started by welding equipment that was left too close to flammable materials.
