Budget Hearings To Begin

Public hearings on Maine’s upcoming

two-year budget are scheduled to begin (at 9 a.m.) Monday. The

Appropriations Committee will review the $6.1 billion spending plan

line-by-line during the next few weeks.

House Speaker Hannah Pingree says the budget calls for some very

difficult cuts to nearly every aspect of state government.

The North Haven Democrat says that as lawmakers go through the

budget process, she wants to be certain that Maine’s most

vulnerable citizens are protected and that any federal aid is used

to its fullest extent possible to speed economic recovery.

Pingree says there was strong bipartisan cooperation when the

supplemental budget passed last month and she hopes that spirit

will continue…
