State officials are cautioning home owners
that ice and snow can trigger spills of heating oil from outdoor
The Department of Environmental Protection says falling ice from
roofs and snow compaction around the tanks can sever lines and
break off filters.
The agency’s alert follows a number of spills around the state.
Oil and Hazardous materials Specialist Sheryl Bernard says a
spill cleanup can be expensive and disruptive, not to mention the
cost of replacing the lost oil. Bernard says a little careful
shoveling this weekend can prevent a disaster later on.
