Lawmakers Discuss 4-Day Schoolweek

The current law requires 180 days of school, with 175 days of instruction.

If the requirements were changed from daysto hours, Millett says Maine could switch to a four day school week, which could help solve the budget problems.

Education Commissioner Susan Gendron agrees that they need to consider all of their options, but some questions need to be answered before any decisions are made. Gendron wants to consider what the impact would be on the families in terms of things like child care.

The education committee will weigh their options before deciding to pass the bill on to the house.
