Queen Victoria Ship to Visit Maine

It was September 2004 when Bar Harbor

last threw a welcoming bash for a visiting cruise ship, the Queen

Mary 2.

Now, Maine’s busiest cruise port wants to do the same thing when

the Queen Victoria calls on Sept. 30. The Queen Victoria is smaller

than the QM2. But, as in the case of the Queen Mary 2, it’ll be the

ship’s maiden call to Bar Harbor and reason to celebrate.

When the QM2 called, portions of streets in downtown Bar Harbor

were closed to vehicles. Gov. John Baldacci and other dignitaries

visited and thousands of others turned out to get a glimpse of the

huge ship.

The Bar Harbor Town Council voted 7-0 to authorize the chamber

of commerce to plan a big event for the Queen Victoria’s arrival.

The ship was launched in 2007 and carries 2,000 passengers.
