Augusta Family Homeless After Fire

The fire broke out at around 7:21pm at the home on the Church Hill Road.

The Augusta battalion chief said the fire started in the garage, and spread to the rest of the house.

A family member had reportedly taken a break from making repairs to a snowmobile when the smell of smoke filled the house.

Crews from four other communities answered the call for help including Vassalboro, Chelsea, Gardiner, and Togus.

The home was already badly damaged when crews arrived, and firefighters said it was a total loss by the time the fire was under control.

All the families members escaped unharmed. The Red Cross put them up in a hotel for the night.

Firefighters said the fire is believed to be accidental, although the exact cause is undetermined.
