William Dana Reed of Orono was sentenced to 30 days in jail after pleading guilty in Penobscot County Superior Court last week to attempting to engage in a sex act in a public place.
Reed was initially charged with attempted gross sexual assault last April after showing up under an Orono bridge to meet an Orono Middle School student. Instead, Reed was met by police and arrested.
Police were called after the student told a school official that a man was contacting him on his MySpace account and asking for sex.
Reed’s attorney told the Bangor Daily News that Reed thought he was talking to an adult and went to the bridge to confirm the person’s age.
Reed ran for a seat in the Maine House of Representatives in 2004, but lost to Democratic Rep. Emily Cain.
