The first call came in around 8pm on Thursday.
The first crews on the scene said the building was totally engulfed in flames.
Snuffing them out was just part of the problem.
Firefighters also had to deal with the bitter cold weather which caused hoses and lines to freeze up, and stopped them from getting any water on the flames.
The fast moving blaze destroyed an unoccupied farmhouse that was owned by Piscataquis County Sheriff John Goggin and his wife.
They purchased the home in June and planned to renovate it for a retirement home.
The Fire Marshall’s office has been called in to investigate.
