(AP) The cold weather of the past week has made a difference, but many lakes and ponds are not ready for anglers, much less ice shacks.
Most observers in central Maine say ice conditions are not yet safe. In the upper Kennebec Valley, following the recent cold weather, it’s just beginning to freeze solid.
Jason Leavitt, a member of the Northern Lites Snowmobile Club in Industry, says he has seen people walking on Porter Lake in New Vineyard, but he hasn’t seen ice shacks yet. Leavitt says a lot of brooks and streams are still open.
