Under the old law, when a person was adopted their original birth certificate was sealed. With an amended document issued that lists the adoptive parents names.
The bill to change that law was sponsored by former state senator Paula Benoit, who was adopted herself.
Now, adoptees can get copies of their original birth certificates at the office of vital records in Augusta. Dozens of folks showed up to do just that.
