MPBN Layoffs

MPBN is also imposing temporary wage reductions in response to cuts in state and federal funding.

The publicly funded station is also eliminating a television tower, and two of its seven radio towers.

President Jim Dowe says WMED in Calais and WMEF in Fort Kent will go off the air in January, as will WMED TV in Calais.

Six of MPBN’s 86 full-time staff jobs will be eliminated, and wages will be slashed by 5% to 20% through the end of the fiscal year in June.

Officials said the network’s reporting staff is not included in the job cuts, and MPBN will continue its commitment to strong coverage of statewide news and public affairs.
