38-year-old Michael Hughes pled guilty to theft: he told police he stole items at the request of 60-year-old Evelyn Dempsey of Hampden and 61-year-old Judy Gariepy who currently resides in Arizona.
The women allegedly gave Hughes a shopping list of items, then paid him 20% of the market value.
Both Dempsey and Gariepy were found not guilty last week.
In court Monday, prosecutors told the court that they wanted Hughes to be given credit for his cooperation with the state, as Hughes had testified at the women’s trial, and returned close to $14,000 worth of stolen items.
Hughes was sentenced to 18 months behind bars.
The judge pointed out Hughes’ extensive criminal record as reason for his sentence of a year and a half in jail.
