A jury in Bangor has cleared two women accused of buying thousands of dollars worth of items they knew were stolen.
60-year-old Evelyn Dempsey of Hampden and 61-year-old Judy Gariepy, who lives in Arizona, were found not guilty of theft by receiving stolen property.
Police say they searched Dempsey’s home and a storage unit in April of 2007, and found $13,000 worth of stolen goods.
Among the items recovered were stoves, dishwashers, lawn mowers, snow blowers, and gas grills.
38-year-old Michael Hughes, who pled guilty to theft, told police the women gave him a shopping list of items to steal.
Hughes is scheduled to be sentenced sometime next week.
Prosecutors are recommending two-and-a-half years.
