Current state law says that gambling cannot begin until noon on Sundays, but a plan is in the works to extent those hours and start the gaming day at 8am.
During a brief meeting Wednesday afternoon, the board was told that a November 24th hearing date and last Friday’s legal deadline for public comment passed with no comments being offered.
But seeing opponents gathered at the gambling board’s meeting Wednesday, the members voted to extend the written comment deadline by 21 days.
One of the opponents of Sunday-morning gambling, the Rev. Jerry Mick of Bangor Baptist Church, says the pastors feel that Sunday morning is a time of worship when gambling should be off-limits.
At its October meeting, the gambling board gave preliminary approval to the proposed change in hours.
