Colonel Patrick Fleming, Chief of the Maine State Police, said the Governor’s Executive Protection Unit had alerted the staff to watch for the letter, similar to letters received by Governor’s offices in eight other states.
Fleming said the protocol for receiving mail to the Governor’s Office was followed and as a result the letter was not opened and no one was exposed.
Members of the Governor’s Executive Protection Team were assisted by Capitol Security and the Augusta Fire Department.
The letter was taken to the state health lab to be analyzed.
It had been mailed from Texas.
