It wasn’t just Mainers who were shopping at stores on Friday in search of bargains.
Canadians also got into the shopping mood, arriving by the busload and in cars for the traditional start of Christmas shopping season on Black Friday.
Kathy Defazio of St. John, New Brunswick, and her daughter, April, hit J.C. Penney, Kohl’s, Wal-Mart and other stores in the Bangor Mall area before heading to Marden’s in Brewer.
They left their husbands at home so they’d have enough room in their vehicle for their purchases.
They say there’s no equivalent shopping day in Canada, and that this marks the fourth or fifth year they’ve come to Maine for Black Friday shopping deals.
Besides retailers, the influx of Canadian shoppers is also a boon to the restaurants and hotels in Maine that cater to them.
