They washed ashore in a river in Pembroke last week. Hospital officials say they had no idea the files were even missing, until they were contacted by a police officer.
Officials tell TV5 that there are strict procedures in place to protect files.
Following the discovery of the stolen files, Downeast Community Hospital would like to figure out how it happened.
Officials won’t discuss what the records contained, but they will say it wasn’t a large number of files that were stolen.
Anyone who wants to know if their records have been affected can request the information in writing from the hospital.
Meanwhile, the hospital is offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to a conviction.
