A Waterville man suffered a gunshot wound to his left hand when unloading hunting gear with a friend as Maine’s deer season opened.
The incident occurred about two miles upstream from the Peltoma Bridge on the Sebasticook River in Pittsfield.
Keith Inman, 59, was holding the barrel of his friend’s gun as it was being passed to him when the incident happened Saturday morning.
Authorities said Inman told game wardens that the other end of the gun hit the canoe and discharged, striking him between his thumb and index finger on his left hand. His friend was not hurt.
Inman was treated and released at Sebasticook Valley Hospital.
Officials of the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife said the incident is under investigation.
Hunting on Saturday was limited to residents only. The regular firearms season begins Monday and runs through Nov. 29.
