New regulations for scallop dragging are being proposed.
Department of Marine Resources Officials say landings have been down in recent years and the new regulations are a conservation measure.
Fishermen say converting their gear to bigger rings and reducing the number of days they can harvest scallops will be expensive and devastate the industry.
A number of other changes are being proposed including dictating which days of the week folks can drag for scallops.
Scallop draggers say they don’t believe the state’s figures for their catch is accurate and those numbers are why the changes are being made.
The new scallop season begins December first.
A meeting is being held in Jonesport Friday night and a public hearing will be held at the ferry terminal in Rockland at 6 Monday night.
