LOW LOBSTER PRICES

Updated 6 years ago

MAINE LOBSTER FISHERMEN GATHERED IN AUGUSTA LAST NIGHT TO TALK ABOUT WAYS TO KEEP THEIR BUSINESS AFLOAT…..

&quot:what do we do&quot:

LOBSTER PRICES ARE THE LOWEST THEY’VE BEEN IN MORE THAN 20-YEARS.

&quot:after you’ve paid for your bait and fuel…it’s grocery money, it’s not enough to sustain us through the winter&quot:

WITH AN INCREASE IN SUPPLY…CONSUMER SPENDING DOWN…AND BANKING PROBLEMS…THE LOBSTER INDUSTRY IS IN CRISIS.

&quot:something along the lines of Katrina in New Orleans…this is a financial disaster for the state of maine&quot:

THEY HOPE TO KEEP LOBSTER A PREMIUM ITEM…BUT CONSUMERS AREN’T BUYING.

&quot:unfortunately, the order in which they don’t buy things is an order in which lobsters are near the top of that list.&quot:

NOW ISN’T A GOOD TIME…MORE THAN 70-PERCENT OF FISHERMENS INCOME IS HAULED IN DURING A FEW MONTHS IN THE FALL.

&quot:just at the peak of our harvest, when things should be going well, the bottom drops out.&quot:

WHAT ISN’T CLEAR IS WHAT’S TO COME…PROGRAMS THAT HELP IN THE SHORT TERM MIGHT NOT WORK LATER.

&quot:we need to be very careful not to do…or have some knee jerk reaction, with some regulation or something, that is not going to benefit us down the road.&quot:

THEY ARE WILLING TO HEAR ALL IDEAS….AND SOME HOPE TO SEE SUPPORT FROM THE STATE.

&quot:when we could be keeping those millions of dollars right here in the state.&quot:

TO KEEP THE LOBSTER INDUSTRY…AND THE PEOPLE WHO WORK IT…IN BUSINESS.

&quot:we want to get the product back up to where it belongs which is the king of the coast.&quot:
