Hancock county sheriff’s deputies say a man from Tremont who helped bring a little bit of christmas to children in need, died behind the wheel of his van and collided with two cars in Trenton.
59-year-old Clyde Carter was heading south on Route 3 just after 7 o’clock Friday night.
He drifted into the northbound lane and hit two cars parked off the side of the road.
Investigators say medical examiners determined Carter had a heart attack before the wreck.
Carter is known in the area for starting a secret Santa program for children in Tremont and Southwest harbor.
All year long he and his family would use their own money – along with donations – to buy gifts for kids who might otherwise go without.
Then the Tremont fire department helped him deliver the presents in a fire truck on Christmas eve.
