FOLKS IN HARTLAND ARE TRYING TO SORT OUT WHO’S IN CHARGE, AFTER SELECTMEN FIRED THE LONG-TIME TOWN MANAGER.
PEGGY MORGAN WAS LET GO EARLIER THIS WEEK, FOLLOWING 32 YEARS ON THE JOB.
SHE’S BEEN ON MEDICAL LEAVE FOR THE PAST TWO-AND-A-HALF MONTHS, DEALING WITH CANCER.
TOWN CHAIR HARRY GOULD SAYS MORGAN CALLED THE BOARD UP AND REQUESTED A MEETING
":Peggy called and said she wanted to meet with us. We didn’t realize that would be declared an illegal meeting. I’ve known Peggy Morgan all my life….When she calls and says she wants to meet, I don’t think twice about it.":
AT THAT MEETING, THE SELECTMEN TOLD MORGAN SHE WAS OUT OF A JOB.
MORGAN TOLD US OVER THE PHONE:
":The selectmen did terminate my employment. They told me that I was to blame for all the problems in the community, and they gave me nothing in writing as to why they were terminating me.":
GOULD SAYS THEY NOW REALIZE THEY DIDN’T HANDLE THE TERMINATION PROPERLY AND HAVE SINCE RESCINDED THAT ACTION.
AN OFFICIAL TOWN MEETING HAS BEEN SCHEDULED TO ADDRESS CONCERNS.
GOULD SAYS THE SELECTMEN BELIEVE POOR FINANCIAL DECISIONS HAVE BEEN MADE.
HE ADDS THAT THE SCHOOL DISTRICT HAS THREATENED TO SUE FOR 400-HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS IN BACK PAYMENT.
GOULD SAYS IN NO WAY IS HE ACCUSING MORGAN OF THEFT, BUT RATHER OF MAKING POOR DECISIONS WITH THE TOWN’S MONEY.
MORGAN SAYS SHE MIGHT TAKE LEGAL ACTION, AND IS SPEAKING WITH LAWYERS.
AN INFORMATIONAL TOWN MEETING HAS BEEN SCHEDULED FOR THURSDAY NIGHT OCTOBER 16TH AT 6 IN THE TOWN HALL.
GOULD SAYS SELECTMEN WILL ANSWER QUESTIONS ABOUT THE SITUATION AND EXPLAIN WHAT THEY PLAN TO DO, AND WHY.
MEANWHILE, SUSAN ACKERMAN IS ORGANIZING A MARCH TO SHOW SUPPORT FOR MORGAN..
SHE HOPES INTERESTED PEOPLE WILL SHOW UP AT THE TOWN’S BANDSTAND AT 6-OCLOCK P.M. ON MONDAY…
