Phoney Phones

A Bar Harbor man says it’s happened to him. James Crockett says his own phone number came up on one call and when he answered the call, he found himself talking to representative from the Dish Network.

He called the company back and reported it to police.

Under Maine law a company must transmit it’s own phone number unless they are displaying the number of a company calling on behalf of them.

Anyone who thinks they may be a victim is urged to call their local police department.

The tactics can also be reported to the attorney general’s office at 1-800-436-2131.
