On Tuesday night the town voted to rescind an agreement that prevented John Jones from removing the dam.
Several years ago he decided he wanted to remove it, but that concerned several other Winterport residents, and the town threatened to seize the dam through eminent domain.
In 2003 Jones and the town reached an agreement that would keep the dam in place. The federal government, however, wanted Jones to either restore the dam to its original condition and add fishways to help migrating fish, or to remove the dam altogether.
Now that he has the town’s blessing, Jones says he plans to begin the removal as soon as he’s figured out the best way to go about it.
