Forty-four-year-old David Bowen of Portland pleaded guilty yesterday to the murder of Kenneth ":Butch": Conrick of Gary, Indiana. As part of a plea agreement, Bowen faces up to 50 years in prison. He’ll be sentenced October 7th.
The boy was reported missing in October 1979, and his body was later found bound to a tree with a cord tied around his neck.
Authorities said the body showed signs of brutal, prolonged torture.
Bowen became a suspect, but no physical evidence linked him to the slaying then. He later moved to Maine, where he made himself a life and lived for more than 20 years.
Investigators reopened the case three years ago, and a DNA sample from his sister showed genetic similarities. He was arrested in December while working on a house painting crew in western Maine.
