Nearly two dozen former prisoners of war from Maine are being honored this weekend with Silver Star Honorable Service Medals.
Gov. John Baldacci presented the awards to 17 former POWs from World War Two, the Korean and Vietnam wars.
A ceremony was held at the new Maine Military Museum and Learning Center in South Portland. Another six former POWs who were unable to attend the event were also honored.
The governor has been presenting the State of Maine medals since August 2006 so that all theveterans in Maine who were eitherwounded or held captive during conflicts overseas can be recognized.
The Maine Bureau of Veterans’ Services identifies more than 425 Prisoners of War who have lived in Maine.
