School Districts Go to 4-Day Week

More than 100 school districts in 16

states have decided to go with four-day school weeks. Now, a Maine

legislator is pushing the idea in hopes of cutting heating and

transportation costs.

Senator Nancy Sullivan says her proposal would bring an

automatic 25 percent reduction in transportation costs. If she’s

re-elected, the Biddeford Democrat plans to submit a bill in

January.

Under present state law, Maine students must be in school at

least 175 days. Sullivan says she’d like to change the minimum

requirement to hours so local districts would have the option of a

four-day school week.

The Maine Department of Education is considering a similar

proposal.
