Maine housing authority director, Dale McCormick says the low income heating assistance program or LiHeap needs a big boost from federal dollars due to the high oil prices.
Last year the state saw $52,000,000 in LiHeap funds: on average those eligible got $650 in aid.
":We need in Maine $101 million more just to do what we did last year which I think is embarrassing a little. 1 month out of a 6 month heating season.": McCormick told TV5 Wednesday.
Local community action programs that help identify those in need say they’ve seen an increase of mainers calling for heating help, which will likely decrease the benefits available.
The US Senate is expected to take up a bill to provide emergency funding for LiHeap, a bill that has already failed to get approval once before.
