Backyard Farms

Construction is to begin this fall on a new 18-acre, state-of-the-art greenhouse, with the first harvest expected in the fall of 2009. Backyard Farms opened a 24-acre greenhouse at the central Maine site last year.

With construction of the new facility at a cost of more than $20 million, the company will have nearly 2 million square feet of greenhouse growing space.

Backyard President Roy Lubetkin says that with its second greenhouse, the company expects to bring its local workforce to more than 175 employees, offer new tomato varieties and meet the increasing demand for locally grown tomatoes.
