Boy Badly Burned in Accident

Authorities say an 8-year-old boy from the Western Maine town of Strong is being treated at a Boston hospital for burns suffered when a can of diesel fuel exploded as his father was using it to start a campfire in Roxbury.

Michael Martin was camping with his family on its property off Route 17 at the time of the Friday night accident.

Stephen McCausland of the Maine Public Safety Department said Michael was standing about 10 feet from the fire when the blast showered him with burning diesel fuel. His father, Timothy Martin, was treated for minor injuries.

Michael was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital with burns over 40 percent of his body.
