Sex Offender Registry

Last year, the state supreme court said Maine’s sex offender law might be unconstitutional because it retroactively increases criminal punishments for people who have already completed their sentences.

Attorney General Steve Rowe spoke before the Criminal Justice and Public Safety Committee in Augusta, saying there are 20 pending cases in court regarding the sex offender registration and notification act.

The committee will be looking at how the registry can be broken up into different categories, based on the type of sex crimes committed.

Lawmakers will also be considering how public notifications can be handled.
