Superior Court Justice Nancy Mills rendered her verdict Wednesday in the non-jury trial of 38-year-old Shannon Atwood last week.
Atwood was accused of murdering 37-year-old Cheryl Murdoch. Murdoch’s decomposed body was found in a wooded area in Canaan in August 2006. She had been missing for about a month and a half.
The prosecution said the evidence against Atwood was overwhelming, but the defense maintained that it was all circumstantial and there was nothing to directly link Atwood to Murdoch’s death.
At one time, Atwood was charged with murdering his wife, Shirley Moon-Atwood, but that charge was dropped last year. Moon-Atwood was reported missing around the same time as Murdoch.
