39-year-old Michael Opdyke from South Thomaston, and 37-year-old Elbert Ranquist, a transient from the Rockland area, are also charged with burglary.
The two made their initial appearances in court Monday afternoon.
Fire fighters were called to Hill Street around 3:30 Friday morning. When they arrived, Duane Carr’s garage was engulfed in flames.
Crews concentrated on keeping the blaze away from the home, which was only about seven feet away.
The shingles were singed, but the interior of the home was completely spared.
Police say Carr does know the two suspects, but will not elaborate.
There has been no word yet on a motive, or what was used to start the fire.
The damage has been estimated in the tens of thousands of dollars.
