Rockland Named a “Coast Guard City”

Rockland can now claim bragging rights as one of only nine communities nationwide to carry the designation of

a &quot:Coast Guard City.&quot:

Sen. Olympia Snowe just announced that Congress approved

Rockland’s nomination for the honor. The city was nominated by

Coast Guard Commandant Thad Allen and the application received a

rigorous review by the Coast Guard.

The designation is aimed at recognizing cities that have

regularly reached out to Coast Guard members assigned to their area

and made them feel at home.

The only other Coast Guard Cities are Eureka, Calif.: Mobile,

Ala.: Morgan City, La.: Wilmington, N.C.: Newport, Ore.: Alameda,

Calif.: Grand Haven, Mich, and Kodiak, Alaska.
